A Summer Without Blockbusters - WIRED

Posted: 21 Jul 2020 04:00 AM PDT

The 1996 action movie Twister is having what we call in the business A Moment. In June, rumors started to (ahem) swirl that it might be getting a reboot. Then, earlier this month, Esquire declared that the film—about a group of tornado-chasing scientists traipsing across the Midwest—was "the most American movie you can watch on the Fourth of July." Last week, New York magazine's Vulture named it "the perfect '90s disaster flick." The attention is well-deserved, of course—director Jan de Bont's movie is as perfect as Helen Hunt's wind-swept hair—but their timing is curious. Why talk about a 24-year-old movie now, when you could talk about it next summer, which will be its quarter-century anniversary? Or, really, any other time?

A theory: There's no other summer blockbusters to talk about.

As Covid-19 keeps most multiplexes closed to the public, all of the big summer movies that were supposed to come out this year have been postponed or delayed, beginning with the new James Bond flick No Time to Die and continuing on to yesterday's report that Christopher Nolan's next movie Tenet will be delayed for a third time. From Jaws in 1975 to Mad Max: Fury Road four decades later, every summer has had one massive movie that nearly everyone saw and proceeded to talk about. But, this year, coronavirus lockdowns are shifting the discourse around the summer blockbuster, changing how we'll remember the culturally significant events of 2020. And perhaps how we'll remember those milestones for years to come.

Quite frankly, this might be a good thing. Right now, Hollywood is (ahem) reeling due to the ramifications of Covid-19. Studios can't—or at least don't want to—release movies when theaters are mostly closed. They're also only just now finding a way to make movies during a pandemic when no one can be less than six feet apart. The impacts, and ripple effects, are likely to be huge. But at the same time, the pressure and predictability of Summer Blockbuster Season has gotten a bit stale. Every year, studios trot out flashy, bold-faced names and big superhero pictures in the hopes of breaking box office records, and every year—at least every year for the last few—it's yielded diminishing returns. Fury Road in 2015 was, undeniably, a juggernaut: smart, beautiful, pure audio-visual adrenaline. Since then, there's been Wonder Woman (solid), X-Men: Apocalypse (uh…), Toy Story 4 (OK, sure), Suicide Squad (Margot Robbie was good in that), Solo: A Star Wars Story (don't remind me), and, um, some other stuff? Each summer there's been a big Marvel movie—Captain America: Civil War, for example, or Avengers: Endgame or a Spidey flick—but as good as those films were, they mostly felt like they were riding on the nostalgia fumes of the first Avengers movie in 2012. (One big exception: Black Panther.) Minus a few indie outliers, the act of going to the movies from April to August has felt obligatory rather than revelatory.

That's OK. I'm not here to pooh-pooh anyone's good time. But if this Summer Without Blockbusters teaches us anything, hopefully it's that its time to shake things up, remember the element of surprise. That's not to say Marvel should scrap its Phase 4 plans, but it wouldn't be the worst idea for a studio to release something unexpected in addition to the latest Fast & Furious reboot. (Sadly, this might've been the hole Tenet filled this summer, but now we'll never know.)

Disney+ teams up with Beyonce for new film - Kidscreen

Posted: 20 Jul 2020 09:22 AM PDT

Disney+ is joining the Beyhive (the name of Beyoncé's fan community, for those who aren't fans), teaming up with singer and actor Beyoncé Knowles-Carter on the new film Black is King. Based on the music of Knowles-Carter's album The Lion King: The Gift, which she curated for the big-screen remake of The Lion King last year, the film explores lessons from the popular film franchise to empower young audiences.

Produced by Knowles-Carter's Parkwood Entertainment for Disney+, the streamer will launch the film on July 31.To broaden its reach with audiences across Africa, Disney and Parkwood inked distribution deals for the film with local broadcasters M-Net and Canal+Afrique.

In production for a year, the filmwhich is being billed as "A celebratory memoir for the world on the Black experience"also features Black celebrities sharing words of encouragement to empower kids, including Pharell Williams, Jay-Z and Academy Award-winning actor Lupita Nyong'o.

Knowles-Carter has carved out a spot for herself in the House of Mouse, starring in the new version of The Lion King, which grossed around US$1.6 billion worldwide against a budget of US$260 million, and performing in The Disney Family Singalong earlier this year.

Looking at Disney+'s growing catalogue, the new film is a bit different from the unscripted shows and action-adventure Star Wars content the SVOD has been greenlighting recently. However, Black is King is part of a concerted effort to pick up more diverse programming, including Hamilton and a reboot of Disney Channel's The Proud Family. Teaming up with Knowles-Carter also helps the streamer tap into the celebrity's large audience, a strategy Disney+ saw the value in when it acquired Taylor Swift's City of Lover concert movie.

Beyonce's mom defends singer against critics - Wonderwall

Posted: 06 Jul 2020 01:32 PM PDT

The Beyhive's No. 1 fan has some stinging responses to fans criticizing Beyonce.

The singer's mom, Tina Knowles-Lawson, came out firing after several people on social media criticized Beyonce for her upcoming visual album "Black is King," claiming she's trying to capitalize on African culture.

Alan Davidson/Alan Davidson/Shutterstock

In a post, Tina noted that several of Beyonce's collaborators are from Africa.

"There's way, way more involved in the making of Black Is King but my point in posting this is simply that those who are criticizing the film (before they even see it) saying it's unauthentic, upset that B doesn't actually go to Africa or say that Bey is simply using African cultures for gain are wrong because 1. She makes less with her Afrocentric content. 2. She's actually taken the time studied African costumes and such and didn't just throw this together. She's worked with actual African dancers, film makers, directors etc on this project so for some African Americans and Africans to say it's a facade is truly discrediting the work of their own people," Tina wrote in a lengthy post.

Continues Tina, "While people whine about her not touring in Africa yet beg for more African representation in entertainment but are mad that they're getting it from one the world's greatest stars is strange to me. They'd rather have B come and they spend their money for a show once or twice every few years rather than have someone of African descent work with African creatives to create art that celebrates them that will last forever and it be done at no cost to them.)"

In another post, Tina blasted critics who have essentially been telling Beyonce how to film the movie, calling on them to "stop being a social media terrorist to the wrong people."

"It is funny because it is so easy to criticize someone when they are doing something. You can always tell them how they could do it better especially if you're not paying for it," she wrote. "Some of you criticize under the thinly veiled guise of educating her. But you haven't seen anything but a 3 minute trailer and you judge so quickly. You can't tell her what to do in her movie! There is a storyline How do you know east or west works in this movie? She is working hard on getting it shown in Africa. But you really should not waste your time seeing it. You should be busy making your own."

"Black is King" premieres on Disney+ on July 31.

The Internet mustache Harry Styles a question: Will you please shave?

Anthony Harvey/Shutterstock

For several days, the former One Directioner has been lighting up social media after he debuted a new look — one with upper-lip hair.

A fan site posted several recent images of Harry's new mustache over the weekend, and fans, as expected, were very quick to voice their opinions.

"In loving memory of harry styles hes not dead he just has a mustache," one fan tweeted. Another wrote, "Pls tell me it's fake and he actually shaved everything."

Others joked about sending him a razor.

"I love harry so much but this isn't it. sorry," yet another fan tweeted.

Page Six noted that Harry has been compared to Mario, Joe Exotic and Hopper from "Stranger Things." People also thought he looks like a "hip '70s grandpa" or a "cowboy."

The photos of Harry — and his lip rug — were taken in Italy while he hung with legendary chef Massimo Bottura. Many believe that the look is part of a new ad campaign for Gucci.

Just days after formally announcing his retirement from rap, Logic has signed a massive deal with video game streaming platform Twitch.

RMV/Shutterstock

The Verge reports that Logic and Twitch agreed to a "seven-figure deal," but the media outlet didn't have more specifics, nor did it detail the exact amount of the deal. Twitch, however, confirmed the partnership in a press release.

"Logic will stream weekly on his Twitch channel which will include a mixture of in-studio sessions, special guests, AMA style formats, and gaming," the company said.

The announcement comes a week after Logic announced his retirement from music — he's stepping away so that he can be more present for his wife and child, he said.

"It's been a great decade. Now it's time to be a great father," he tweeted on July 16.

Still, the new partnership is more on-brand with who Logic really is, he says.

"I'm not this rapper guy, man. I'm just a nerd. I love video games," he told The Verge. "I'm blessed enough to have millions of fans and followers. So it is a great partnership…I'm going to bring new eyes to their service, they're going to bring new money to my bank account, and — I'm just kidding."

A federal judge mourning the loss of her son following a murder in New Jersey on Sunday is the same judge that presided over Teresa Giudice and Joe Giudice's fraud case.

Federal Judge Esther Salas sentenced Teresa to 15 months in federal prison, while Joe was sentenced to 41 months in prison. Joe has since been deported to his native Italy.

On Sunday, the judge's son was shot and killed by a man dressed as a FedEx delivery driver, CNN reported. The judge's husband was also shot multiple times, but his injuries were not fatal. Judge Salas was not injured in the shooting.

After the horrific attack, the "Real Housewives of New Jersey" star issued a statement of heartbreak via her lawyer.

"Teresa was very shaken by the news and was very emotional when she heard about it," the reality TV star's attorney, James Leonard Jr., said in a statement to USA Today Network New Jersey. "She told me that [she] would be praying very heavily for Judge Salas and her family. This is absolutely devastating."

On Monday, the prime suspect in the shooting was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, CNN reported.

ABC reported that police believe the judge's husband, a defense lawyer, may have been the intended target. According to the report, the suspect was also an attorney who had a case before Judge Salas in 2015.

In 2019, he had heart surgery and his band pushed back a tour. A year later, his band's tour got postponed due to a global health crisis. And, for months now, he's been stuck quarantining with his girlfriend and their young son.

While this sounds trying, for Mick Jagger, it all led to true happiness.

The Rolling Stones frontman and Melanie Hamrick's "love story has heated up" over the past year, a source told Page Six, adding that they've been quarantining together in a rented castle in Tuscany amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Melanie recently posted photos from their temporary home while celebrating her 34th birthday.

"The couple's friends consider them married — but of course they aren't as Mick doesn't do that anymore, lol," the insider said. "Mick's pals say they haven't seen him this happy in decades, and he has finally settled down. It only took a heart attack and pandemic."

Matt Baron/Shutterstock

In December 2016, Mick, 76, and Melanie welcomed son Deveraux.

The couple has been fiercely devoted to each other, as Melanie, a ballerina, took time off from the American Ballet Theatre to take care for her man as he was recuperating from heart valve replacement surgery

"With ABT shut down, it turns out Melanie made all the right choices," Page Six's source said.

While in isolation, Mick hasn't exactly been taking it easy. In April, he said he was "rehearsing in isolation," sharing an image of himself riffing on the guitar

While apart due to the pandemic, the Stones recently released "Living in a Ghost Town," the legendary group's first original song since 2012. Page Six reported the band is also working on another new song via Zoom.

Amanda Bynes has purged her entire Instagram to possibly make way for an online store.

The former actress has rebranded her personal Instagram page as the Matte Black Online Store, but she's yet to post anything under the new banner.

In deleting all her Instagram pictures, Amanda has removed several selfies and multiple images with her fiancé, Paul Michael.

Since leaving the Hollywood scene, the "Easy A" star has gotten into fashion and attended classes at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. Recently she even hinted that she might start selling her designs.

"Getting my Bachelor's degree from FIDM, Taking online classes, trying to get a 4.0 GPA :] 🎓," she wrote on Instagram in May. "Looking forward to starting my online store in the future #goals."

After several years filled with mental health struggles and bizarre behavior, Amanda, 34, has tried to take hold of her life. She got engaged earlier this year after meeting Paul in a sober living facility. Not long after, she and Paul announced that the were expecting their first child. However, her lawyer later claimed that Amanda is not pregnant.

Around that same time, she was ordered by a judge to enter a psychiatric facility for mental health treatment.

Page Six reported Amanda says she's now living in a transitional facility "to help with my social anxiety that caused me to drop out of school months ago."

She says she's "back on track and doing well!"

Tom Cruise — who's been living in Britain amid the coronavirus pandemic and recently restarted production on the seventh film in his "Mission: Impossible" franchise — surprised fans when he landed his helicopter on a London golf course then hopped out and headed to the clubhouse for lunch during the weekend of July 18, The Sun reported.

"Locals were amazed when Tom landed on the fairway," a source told The Sun, which has photos.

Tom, a trained pilot, landed the black chopper next to the ninth hole and emerged wearing jeans, a dark sweater and a black face mask and carrying a black bag, the British tabloid reported. He then walked through some tall grass and had lunch in the Richmond Golf Club's exclusive Grade-I listed clubhouse. While he was busy eating, The Sun reported, golfers and locals approached the helicopter to take selfies.

Earlier in July, The Sun reported that Tom was seen flying the same helicopter above remote farmland in Oxfordshire, England. Tom's also been seen practicing motocross stunts on a track created on a parcel of rented farmland in recent weeks. Britain has approved some projects to resume filming in the country as COVID-19 lockdowns have eased.

Back in June, The Sun reported that as the global health crisis raged on, "M:I7" — which was slated to shoot back-to-back with "Mission: Impossible 8" — was set to resume filming under a creative new plan: Tom, fellow producers and director Christopher McQuarrie brainstormed an idea to build a village on a former U.K. military site, which would allow the cast and crew to not only start shooting again but avoid contracting the coronavirus, as they'd be in a bubble as they lived and worked at the location, away from outsiders.

It's unclear if that happened, as Daily Mail has since reported that production on the franchise has resumed at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire, England.

Kanye West made headlines after delivering emotional, bombastic and polarizing remarks at his first campaign rally following his decision to run for president — and friends and his in-laws are deeply concerned, claims a new report.

Evan Agostini/Invision/AP/Shutterstock

At the July 19 rally at the Exquis Event Center in North Charleston, South Carolina, the rapper and designer-turned politician — who wore a security vest and had "2020" shaved into his hair — upset some attendees when he claimed that abolitionist Harriet Tubman, who escaped slavery and helped rescue dozens of enslaved people, "never actually freed the slaves. She just had the slaves go work for other white people."

During his monologue, Kanye also shared some deeply personal revelations about abortion, confessing that he and wife Kim Kardashian West considered terminating her first pregnancy — they now have four kids — but that he changed his mind after God intervened and told him not to. According to USA Today, Kanye told the audience, "So even if my wife were to divorce me after this speech, she brought [our daughter] North into the world, even when I didn't want to. She stood up, and she protected that child."

He also broke down in tears while talking about how his own father wanted his mother to abort him and, USA Today also reported, said that though he'd fight to keep abortion legal, he believes in an option he described as "maximum increase" that would see "everybody that has a baby gets a million dollars or something in that range."

Some people at the rally walked out, and they're not the only ones with concerns. TMZ spoke to sources connected to Kanye who claim, as TMZ writes, that "he has concerned, upset and alarmed many of his friends and the Kardashians." According to TMZ, "those around him believe Kanye is in desperate need of professional help and is in the middle of a serious bipolar episode, but he won't listen to them."

There are fears that Kanye's comments will negatively affect the billionaire Yeezy designer's business and "trigger boycotts," as TMZ put it.

Michael Wyke/AP/Shutterstock

Kim, Kanye's wife of six years, did not publicly react to his comments about her in the day that followed his rally, but TMZ has been told that Kim's family "is upset that Kanye talked about Kim's first pregnancy and how they discussed abortion." TMZ points out that it's "curious" Kanye mentioned the possibility that Kim would divorce him for speaking out like this about their private life, as the webloid believes it implies that the couple have discussed ending their marriage.

On top of all this, TMZ reports, Kanye's family and friends are unhappy he's saying these things as he pursues the presidency on the "Birthday Party" ticket "because they feel Kanye is a distraction to what is a very important election," the webloid writes.

Despite alleged concern over Kanye's mental health and his private revelations, however, sources told TMZ that the Kardashians are not concerned that the "Birthday Party" candidate's remarks will negatively affect Kim's brand because, it writes, "their money is separate and her and Kanye's brands are distinguishable."

Kristen Bell isn't letting quarantine stand in the way of a "perfect" 40th birthday party.

Jim Spellman/Getty Images

On Saturday, July 18, the former star of "The Good Place" posted an Instagram video showing herself talking to the camera in the dark.

"Well, we just wrapped up what I would say is the perfect 40th birthday party, which consisted of my friends and family that are in our pod right now, eating great food from a local restaurant, sitting on our porch watching the kids play, and basically playing cards all afternoon," the mom of two explained. "It was pretty perfect."

Bell explained that as she grows older, she no longer has an interest in buying anything — "other than peace of mind." With that in mind, she explained that for her birthday she would be making a donation to Immigrant Families Together. The charity is dedicated to reuniting and supporting families who have been separated along the US/Mexico border.

Bell finished her video with a special birthday wish from a pal. "As Monica Padman reminded me tonight, only 60 years left," she grimaced.

Bell's husband Dax Shepard also shared his birthday wishes for his wife on Instagram. The actor shared a shirtless photo of himself standing with his wife, who is holding one of their daughters.

"Happiest birthday most beautifulest buddy @kristenanniebell," he wrote. "Thank you for this suspiciously great life you've made for us."

Russell Wilson is not ready to jump back into football.

John Salangsang/WWD/Shutterstock

The Seattle Seahawks quarterback shared his hesitations about the 2020 NFL season in a Sunday, July 19, tweet.

"I am concerned. My wife is pregnant. @NFL Training camp is about to start," he wrote. "And there's still No Clear Plan on Player Health & Family Safety."

He continued on saying he wants to both play football and protect his family "#WeWantToPlay," he wrote.

The 31-year-old Super Bowl winner announced in January that he and Ciara are expecting a second child together. They already have a daughter, Sienna, 3. Ciara is also a mom to six-year-old Future Zahir with her ex, rapper Future.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus lockdown, Wilson has expressed concern and empathy for those suffering with the ramifications from the virus. In mid-March, he and the singer announced that they would be donating one million meals in order to support the Seattle community.

Ciara, 34, has also opened up about the struggles around being pregnant during this time. In April, she shared a video from an ultrasound appointment on her Instagram

"The life of a pregnant woman in Covid-19 Era is very interesting," she wrote. "Russ had to FaceTime me from the car for our Ultrasound."

Wilson is not the only NFL player concerned about plans to move ahead with the 2020 season. Stars in the league such as Todd Gurley, Drew Brees and J.J. Watt also used the #WeWantToPlay hashtag to share their apprehension.
