She's a triple threat who has enthralled the world with her singing, dancing and acting over the past three decades. Now, she's demonstrating her fourth, fifth and sixth talents.

The Museum of the Moving Image will screen "Homecoming: A Film By Beyoncé" on Friday, Jan. 3, at 7 p.m.

The pop culture icon wrote, directed and produced this recent release, which documents her two performances at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California, in April 2018. Using many different camera angles, Beyoncé's meticulously choreographed stage routines are interspersed with behind-the-scenes footage of concert promotion and preparation. Of course, Jay-Z makes a few cameos.

After premiering on Netflix on April 17, 2019, "Homecoming" was an instant streaming sensation, garnering nominations for three Cinema Eye Honors. But it's best on the big screen. Plus, the editor, Alexander Hammer, will be on hand for an open discussion. His resume includes directing and/or editing videos with Madonna, Taylor Swift, Lizzo and Selena Gomez.

Tickets are $15.

Much of the almost two-and-a-half-hour movie comes from the high-octane 2018 Coachella concerts. With pyramid-shaped bleachers on the stage, Beyoncé moves and grooves through her repertoire with help from a marching band with more than 100 musicians, back-up dancers, steppers, singers and even baton twirlers. She sports a number of outfits, including a Nefertiti-inspired gown, sweatshirts recalling African-American Greek life, and sparkling bodysuits with fishnets that conjure up her time with Destiny's Child, a three-women pop group that won three Grammys from 1990 to 2006.

The outfits are color-coordinated. The moves are synchronized. The music celebrates African-American achievement with an emphasis on Queen Bey. After all, she's the star.

At times, quotes from prominent African-American entertainers and scholars appear on the screen. At other times, the audience watches grueling rehearsals. Beyoncé provides the voiceover narration. When not relating events and facts, she gets a bit intimate, sharing her difficult pregnancy and her regret that she never attended a historically black college, such as Morehouse College or Howard University, like her father. (She spent her childhood touring and performing with Destiny's Child.)

The Museum of the Moving Image is located at 36-01 35th Ave. in Astoria's Kaufman Arts District.

‘Murder Mystery,’ ‘Irishman,’ Beyonce’s ‘Homecoming’ Among Netflix’s Most Popular Films of 2019 - Variety

Posted: 30 Dec 2019 08:00 AM PST

Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston's "Murder Mystery," Beyonce's historic "Homecoming," Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman" and Disney's "The Incredibles 2" rank among the most popular Netflix movies of 2019, the notoriously ratings-averse streamer announced Monday.

Netflix has released a master list of its most-favored content in the United States, as well as individual rankings of films, original series, unscripted shows and comedy specials.

Following "Murder Mystery" as the year's most popular film were titles including Michael Bay's critically panned "6 Underground," Pixar's "The Incredibles 2," Ben Affleck's "Triple Frontier," and Sony Animation's Oscar winner "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse."

Viewership numbers were not disclosed, though in June the streamer tweeted that "Murder Mystery" had Netflix's biggest opening weekend ever, with over 30 million accounts watching the whodunit around the world. A sequel is currently in development.

For the 2019 lists, "popularity" was not determined by the total number of viewers for a given piece of content, a Netflix spokesperson said. The lists were generated by counting the total number of households to stream an individual title for at least two minutes, during the first 28 days of its release.

For titles that debuted on Netflix less than 28 days ago, the company used a projection model to determine where final viewership numbers are likely to land (as it has done in the past on earnings calls with investors).

Bay's Ryan Reynolds action film "6 Underground," for instance, only premiered on Dec. 13 — but it's the second most popular film release of 2019, and is ranked third on an overall list that includes series like "Stranger Things," according to Netflix.

The documentary title that topped the year was Joe Berlinger's "Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes." On its heels was the visual feast "Our Planet," the water cooler sensation "FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened" and the Coachella festival masterpiece "Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce."

Movies are notably dominant on the overall list, considering Netflix is a service built on bingeable episodic content. Only three series made the cut: "Stranger Things," the Duffer brothers' sci-fi thriller and the only series to break into the top five, as well as Henry Cavill's "The Witcher" (No. 6) and the comic-based "The Umbrella Academy" (No. 9).

Thematically, the film content skews more popcorn than prestige. Billboards in Los Angeles and airport terminals wherever an Oscar voter might wander are littered with ads for Noah Baumbach's "Marriage Story" and "The Two Popes," but these lists suggest Netflix subscribers prefer Ryan Reynolds doing air stunts in a jet sponsored by Red Bull (which is indeed a plot point in "6 Underground").

If Netflix's popularity metrics are to be taken at face value (many traditional media analysts do not do so), it would also justify some risky financial bets taken by the film group, led by Scott Stuber. Netflix acquired "Triple Frontier" for a reported $90 million after the film's distribution deal fell through at Paramount, and faced wide criticism and doubt for overspending.

Likewise, the scripted Ted Bundy story "Extremely Wicked," starring Zac Efron and also from Berlinger, received a mixed 56% score from Rotten Tomatoes but left this year's Sundance Film Festival a $9 million check from Netflix following a bidding war.

If the list has any forecasting power, it might be that Netflix needs to up its feature animation game. "The Incredibles 2" and "Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2," both franchises from Disney, brought them eyeballs in 2019. Those properties, and many more lingering from a previous output deal, have been locked in the vault at Netflix's competitor, Disney Plus.

Netflix also revealed its most-watched TV shows of the year, including "Stranger Things 3," "The Witcher" and "When They See Us."

Sorry, Beyonce: You’ll have to wait awhile longer to tie Alison Krauss’s Grammys record [POLL RESULTS] - Gold Derby

Posted: 31 Dec 2019 10:00 AM PST

Beyonce has won 23 Grammys over the course of her career. The all-time record for female artists is 27 — that's how many country/bluegrass star Alison Krauss has accumulated. It just so happens that Beyonce has four nominations this year, which is exactly what she needs to tie that record, assuming she wins all of them. That's easier said than done, though. According to our readers, she'll win at least one of her categories when prizes are handed out in January, but she won't win all of them. Scroll down for our complete poll results.

Queen Bey is nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Visual Media Song for "Spirit," Best Pop Album for "The Lion King: The Gift" and Best Music Film for "Homecoming." Less than a quarter of our respondents (24%) are expecting a clean sweep. More than half (56%) say that she'll win something, but not everything. That leaves 20% who are anticipating a complete shutout.

We're predicting three of the four categories Beyonce is up for in our predictions center, but she's an underdog in all three of them. The pop field presents her biggest challenge because in both of her categories she's up against artists with nominations in the top four general field races, including Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande and Lizzo. General field nominations usually indicate greater support from the recording academy and thus greater strength in the genre races.

Beyonce has a better shot for Best Visual Media Song, where she ranks a close second with 39/10 odds, trailing Lady Gaga's "I'll Never Love Again" from "A Star is Born." Gaga won that prize last year for "Shallow" from the same movie, and this year she's also up for Song of the Year, but for yet another "Star is Born" song, "Always Remember Us This Way."

However, there's a pretty good chance Beyonce will win Best Music Film. Netflix's "Homecoming" was such a critically acclaimed hit that it earned Beyonce four Emmy nominations. In that race she's up against David Crosby's "Remember My Name," Thom Yorke's "Anima" (directed by Paul Thomas Anderson), "Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool" (directed by Stanley Nelson) and "Shangri-La" (directed by Oscar winner Morgan Neville). "Homecoming" has the highest profile of those nominees, so if Beyonce is going to inch closer to Krauss's record, it might be there.
